Rotterdam, Wednesday, July 27, 2017 – Newcomer in the top class Punjab Cricket Club Rotterdam is in third place with three rounds to go. “I think the very cricket-loving Netherlands expected us to be relegated,” captain Sulaiman Tariq outlines the surprise that is palpable everywhere. “We ourselves did not expect that we would survive relatively easily.”

By Emile Hilgers

“Our goal was to maintain at the highest level,” Tariq continues. “We have been playing with this team for three years now and have worked hard to get where we are now. But that we are so high so quickly comes as a surprise to us. In addition, a number of opponents in the top class are not as strong as we expected. ”

Coach Akram Din cites the contribution of former players of Dutch champion Excelsior’20 – including Tariq – as one of the reasons for the success. “We are also tactically strong. And yes, maybe also that we have many Pakistani players. Cricket is in the blood of Pakistanis. ” Tariq adds that the team does not rely on the former top-class players, and is especially strong in breadth. “A few new players have been recruited because we got promoted, but the most important thing is our commitment.”

Unfortunately, the sporting successes are overshadowed by an accommodation problem. The main field on the Zuiderparkweg only just meets the requirements for the top class, the second is small and is occupied by a dog association on Sunday morning.

Tariq: “Teams cannot join because of insufficient playing time. This year we started with youth and there is already a member freeze. We receive extra subsidy from the union when we provide training at primary schools. But we can’t offer it if they can’t play games with us ?! ”
